Portraiture produced by Makarov depicts people who belong to his own circle of friends or likenesses of those who have commissioned portraits from the artist. Makarov dissolves the realism of the photographic templates used through painterly and technical manipulation; he alienates the frontally posed faces of his subjects, causing them to appear as though enshrouded by an almost transparent veil of colour.
