With his Museum of Stillness, established in 1992 and located in the historic centre of Berlin, Makarov was able to realize the creation of a space that approaches his conception of the ideal mode of pictorial presentation. The large apartment, remodelled upon his initiative, is viewed by Makarov as a ‘sacred’ meditational site, in which the contemplative workings of his paintings are aptly able to unfurl. Similar installations have been presented by the artist at Kröchlendorff Castle in Brandenburg and at the Arnot Art Museum in New York.
