Comprising a considerable share of his larger body of work, Makarov’s expansive repertoire of landscape depictions reveal an intensely deep relationship to nature. Educing visions of landscapes that appear more fantastic than they do realistic, Makarov is focused upon realizing a poetic mode for representing nature and exploiting the imminent sensual potential its representation entails. The task of tapping into that potential is left to the viewer, whose gaze coheres to the vaporous and in places dramatically illuminated surfaces, upon which an unforeseen pictorial depth unfolds.
