Figure paintings entered the artist’s repertoire starting in 1992. The shadowy figures of his models are placed into a space that is infused with light, resulting in sublime portrayals of his counterparts in the studio. A latent sensuousness issues from a fictional voyeuristic distance; the visual staging of a moment to moment situational unravelling toys with the imagination of the beholder, who intuitively grasps the body-language of the figure represented and willingly follows the choreography enacted by the artist, accepting his suggestion that the interior depiction has resulted from a natural and unforeseen encounter.
